Third LDR Roundtable Youth in Local Government- Realities and Prospects
At the end of the two-day event, recommendations from working groups on these topics were presented in the presence of the Minster of Local Government, Dr. Khaled Qawasmi and several Senior Ministry staff. The recommendations were also presented during the follow-on Youth Summit held in September as part of a public participation paper that the youth prepared.
The overall recommendations of the workshop are summarized below:
- Adopt national policies and strategies that enhance youth’s role in their communities and facilitate their active engagement in local communities.
- Sponsor programs and outreach mechanisms that empower youth and provide them with the platform to engage in community development and decision-making processes at the local level.
- Raise awareness amongst the key decision makers and the general public on the significance of the role of youth in society through demonstrating real cases of their accomplishments and achievements.
- Incorporate topics of local government, democratic processes, and civic engagement in the Palestinian national educational curriculum and non-formal education programs.
- Continue support for the Youth Shadow Local Council (YSLC) model in terms of reaching sustainability, replicability, and institutionalization of YSLCs in the local government sector.
- Create frameworks and national bodies that represent youth and advocate for their advanced representation, participation, and active role as catalysts for positive change.
