Global Communities celebrates the 2014 Green Apple Day of Service

On September 28, Global Communities West Bank and Gaza celebrated the 2014 Green Apple Day of Service in coordination with the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Aqqaba Municipality. This is the third year that Global Communities celebrate the Green Apple Day of Service, initiated by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), along with Global Communities colleagues and other organizations around the world.

This year’s activities took place in Aqqaba, in the Tubas Governorate. Over 70 students from girls’ and boys’ schools in Aqqaba, as well as 25 volunteers, participated in the day’s activities. After initial orientations at the schools, the girls, accompanied by volunteers, ventured out to their school yard; and the boys, also accompanied by volunteers, headed to Aqqaba Park. Both groups enjoyed a fun day of planting, cleaning, and painting. This year’s theme was 'reuse' - how we can take what would normally be considered as trash, and reuse the items for games, projects, and other uses. The activities focused on raising awareness of environmental issues, and on fostering the spirit of volunteerism among the community. Thanks to all the volunteers as well and USAID West Bank/Gaza for funding and supporting this day.
